Can I Drive from Marrakech to Merzouga?

Yes — the route from Marrakech to Merzouga is entirely on paved roads and is well-signed throughout. A standard 2WD rental car is sufficient for the entire journey; a 4WD is not necessary unless you plan to drive off-road into the dunes or access Erg Chigaga from M’hamid. The route covers approximately 560 km and passes through Ait Benhaddou, Ouarzazate, Skoura, Dades Gorge, Todra Gorge, Erfoud, and Rissani.

Important driving notes for the Marrakech–Merzouga route: The Tizi n’Tichka mountain pass (km 100–130) can be closed by snow between December and February — check conditions before departure. Fuel stations are relatively scarce between Tinghir and Merzouga (approximately 180 km); fill up at every opportunity. Speed cameras and police checkpoints are common on major routes; the national speed limit on open roads is 100 km/h.

Is There a Train from Marrakech to the Desert?
