The Dades Valley stretches east from Ouarzazate for over 100 km along the course of the Dades River, a long corridor of rose gardens, almond groves, fortified kasbahs, and Berber villages set against the dramatic backdrop of the High Atlas to the north. It is known as the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs — and the name is not an exaggeration. Mud-brick towers rise from every hilltop, every river bend, every village cluster along the valley floor.
Key Sights in the Dades Valley
Kelaa M’Gouna — The City of Roses
Kelaa M’Gouna, located 115 km from Ouarzazate, is the centre of Morocco’s rose cultivation industry. The surrounding fields produce Damask roses that are harvested each May for rosewater, rose oil, and cosmetic products. The annual Rose Festival (Moussem des Roses) takes place in May and is one of the most vibrant local celebrations in southern Morocco, featuring music, dance, traditional dress, and the election of a Rose Queen. Outside of May, the town is quiet but the rose cooperatives are open year-round for visitors to see the distillation process and purchase rosewater products.
Boumalne Dades
Boumalne Dades, at the junction of the Dades Valley road and the main N10 highway, is the typical overnight stop for desert tours. It sits at the entrance to the upper Dades Gorge and offers views south over the Jbel Saghro mountain range, a dramatic volcanic landscape of dark rock and narrow valleys. Several good hotels are located directly above the gorge with terrace views.
The Monkey Fingers — Dades Gorge Rock Formations
The upper Dades Gorge, approximately 25 km north of Boumalne Dades, features extraordinary rock erosion formations known locally as the Monkey Fingers or Brain Rocks — columns of layered pink and cream limestone that have been carved by wind and rain into organic, almost sculptural forms. The road into the gorge is unpaved above the main tourist viewpoint but drivable in a standard vehicle to the formations. Many private desert tours include a 30-minute stop here on Day 1.
