Ouarzazate, pronounced ‘Wah-zah-zaht’, is the film-making capital of Morocco and the natural gateway between the High Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert. At 1,160 metres above sea level and at the junction of the Draa and Dades rivers, it sits at the precise geographical point where the mountains end and the desert begins — which is both its physical and cultural identity.
Atlas Film Studios
Atlas Film Studios is the main attraction for most first-time visitors. With a total floor area of approximately 322,000 square metres, it is the largest film studio complex in the world by area. Founded in 1983, it has hosted major productions including Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, The Mummy, Babel, Jewel of the Nile, Alexander, and numerous others. Entire sets from these productions are preserved as permanent outdoor exhibitions — visitors can walk through a life-size recreation of ancient Rome, a medieval Middle Eastern marketplace, and an Egyptian temple complex. Entrance is approximately EUR 8–10 and guided tours are available.
Kasbah Taourirt
Kasbah Taourirt is the most complete and impressive kasbah in southern Morocco still accessible to visitors. Built by the powerful Glaoui clan in the 19th century, it served as the residence of Thami El Glaoui, the Pasha of Marrakech, who effectively controlled all of southern Morocco under French Protectorate governance. The kasbah is a labyrinthine complex of reception halls, private apartments, harem quarters, and service areas, all decorated with intricate plasterwork, painted cedar ceilings, and zellige tile. Entrance is approximately EUR 2–3 and a UNESCO restoration project has stabilised much of the structure.
Fint Oasis
The Fint Oasis, 10 km south of Ouarzazate, is one of the most beautiful and least visited oases in Morocco. A 40-minute walk from the road leads into a narrow valley of palm trees, trickling water channels, and vegetable gardens maintained by a small Berber community. Many desert tour operators include a brief stop here for those on private tours.
